 | History of Vietnamese embroidery Vietnamese embroidery started in the 17th century in Ha Tay province and has since spread to many provinces recently. At first, people just embroidered designs onto flags or parasols. At that time, it was used exclusively for the imperial palace and consisted of primarily animal or farmer designs. Then, during French domination (18th Century to 1945), embroidery became an important art form used to serve the upper class Vietnamese people and French aristocrats. At this time, the quality of embroidery workmanship and design became more sophisticated and many more uses were discovered for the art. Soon fine embroidered cloths were used to dress up tablecloths, napkins, and pillow covers.Since 1945 embroidery has become commonly used in Vietnamese restaurants, hotels, and for other luxuries. Many of the embroidery is developed by farmers, and embroidery is supplementary work during their agriculture leisure time.
